Laugh, Cry, Wait is a podcast that will give you a behind the scenes view of us plotting Pretense, and other dramas in the future. You’ll get to listen in as we start from a concept and build it out into a plot that’s ready to be taken and fleshed out by a writer. You get to come along with us as we hash out who characters are, what role they play in the story, and how they’ll drive the story to it’s conclusion. Laugh, Cry, Wait isn’t intended to be a fast overview of the plotting process. Instead it’s meant to take you on the rambling ride that a story idea goes through before it becomes a viable plot.

Every story has a protagonist. This may or may not be a human, but if there is nothing
and no one for the audience to care about, to fear for the well being of, and to identify with,
there is no story. The protagonist is the central focus of the narrative.
Today, I’ll be looking at one way we could go about creating a protagonist from scratch.

There comes a time, in the process of plotting, that one must look over the work they've done, and tidy it up a bit.
As we head toward the climax of this story, this is one of the things we end up doing. Making sure the second act, the long middle of the story,
provides the motivation for characters, and the connections between them, to drive the climax in a natural and unforced manner. We also refine details surrounding some of the key players in the final parts of the second act.

It would appear that we're arriving at the beginning of the end. This doesn't mean we're out of the plotting woods yet, but it does mean we can start to see some sky through the treetops. This isn't the end itself, it's not even the climax. It's just the point at which course correction for Robert, if it was ever possible, becomes exponentially less possible. In this episode, we wrap up Plotting Act 2 and prepare to plot the third and final act of pretense.

Motivation. It's an incredibly important part of writing characters. The motivation needs to be real and relatable. On top of that, it must also make sense for the given character. Strong motivation is what makes good characters great. In this episode, we attempt to flesh out what Ida's motivation is, and as a result, we begin shaping the goal toward which the story arc will move.
